Chewings is much like creeping red fescue, but it tends to grow more as a bunch grass than a spreader. This makes it even slower to fill in bare areas and recover from wear.

What is survivor Chewings fescue?

Chewings Fescue is a perennial grass that tolerates dry conditions, acidic soil and some shade. It has a fine appearance and is often used for lawn turfs, mixed with ryegrass, red fescue and others. It prefers to be mowed on a high setting and does not tolerate heavy foot traffic.

Is Chewings fescue a fine fescue?

There are more than 450 species of fescue, but only 10 are suitable for turfgrass. Five fine fescue taxa (strong creeping red fescue, slender creeping red fescue, Chewings fescue, hard fescue, and sheep fescue) are often grouped together and called “fine fescues.”

Is Chewings fescue a tall fescue?

Chewings Fescue closely resembles Tall Fescue in that it grows very upright rather than creeping. It does, however, have the fine texture that is characeteristic of the fine fescue species. Chewings Fescue is a bunch type grass and grows well in the shade, in addition to being drought resistant.

Chewings Fescue (Festuca rubra commutata) Chewings fescue gets its name from a Mr Chewing who was the first person to have sold its seed in New Zealand. It has since become widely used throughout the 'cool season' areas of the planet, such as the UK, New Zealand, Northern Europe and parts of continental North America.

How do you identify chewing fescue?

A tufted form is called Chewing's fescue and a creeping form is called red fescue. Leaves rolled in cross section (see photo insert, top left), visually resembling pine needles; leaves a dark emerald green colour; dead leaf sheaths at tiller base highly lignified, chocolate brown with lighter straw coloured veins.

How tall does Chewings fescue grow?

They grow slowly and if left uncut reach a mature height of only 8 to 12 inches. They don't like a lot of fertilizer, and thrive in dry, infertile soil. They tolerate not only partial shade but also drought. In fact, irrigation and fertilizer actually restrict their development.

Is fescue better than Bermuda grass?

Bermuda grass varieties tend to do well in the heat, while Fescue does not. Bermuda also tolerates drought better than Fescue, and that's important to us due to the weather in recent years! A lower water requirement can also save you a bit of money on your water bill.

Why do people not like tall fescue?

Tall Fescue is toxic to just about anything that eats it. Google it. It's toxic to dairy cows, beef cows, horses, sheep, goats, birds, grasshoppers, ants and even nematodes. It also cuts down on biodiversity because it takes up space that native biota could have occupied and it's aggressive.
