For the first time in five years, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is stocking lakes high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with rainbow trout, on Aug. 12, 2022.

How often do they stock Apollo Park?

The Department stocks the lakes with Rainbow Trout twice a month October through May. Outside of those months, we do not stock the lakes. For our three annual fishing derbies at Apollo Park, we also purchase additional prize fish on top of the normal amount twice a month for stocking.

Do they stock Lake Gregory with fish?

Fish Stocking: Lake Gregory is, first and foremost, a trout-fishing lake. Both the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) and the Lake Gregory Recreation Company stock the lake with a monthly stock of Rainbow Trout throughout much of the year.

Is Baum Lake open to fishing?

Excellent bird watching and fishing add other great opportunities for recreation. The best fishing is often found near the outflow from Crystal Lake into Baum Lake. Osprey can be observed fishing in the cold waters of the lake.

Why do stocked trout not bite?

Do you need a fishing license for Prado Lake?

A California state fishing license is required to fish at all our parks and we offer fishing workshops and derbies throughout the year. The lakes are stocked every Thursday, weather permitting. The lake is open on stocking days. Prado lake is currently closed to fishing due to dangerous levels of algae blooms.

What kind of fish are in Apollo Park?

Fishing Info: The park is stocked with rainbow trout from Winter through early Spring and catfish during the Summer months. There are also bluegill, largemouth bass, crappie, and carp in here. Be sure to visit the CDFW web site for complete regulations before heading out.

Is Apollo Park man made?

Stocking Recommendations for Ponds 1 Acre or Larger

  • Stock fingerling bream (bluegill and redear sunfish), catfish, triploid grass carp, and fathead minnows in the fall or winter.

What attracts trout the most?

Good live bait options include scrub worms, earthworms, minnows, mudeye, maggots, yabbies, crickets, grubs, grasshoppers. These work really well suspended from a float, on a small running sinker rig or a paternoster rig. Artificial baits will include power bait and bread dough.

What is the trick to catching trout?

There are lots (and lots) of ways to fish for trout, but three of the easiest ways to fish for trout in lakes are:

  1. Suspending bait under a bobber. Start with a piece of worm or a little PowerBait or similar product on a bait hook.
  2. Fishing with bait off the bottom. ...
  3. Retrieving a spinner, spoon or fly.

When should you not fish for trout?

As a general rule, trout are happiest when water temperatures are below 65ºF. Anytime water temperatures in moving water hit 67ºF, STOP FISHING. When water temperatures in moving water are between 65-66ºF we recommend getting out early in the morning and not fishing through the heat of the day.

How old is a 24 inch trout?

One modest 24 incher proved to be 22 years old. Even trout in the 15” range were into their second decade of life.

Do trout like sun or shade?

Trout feeding picks up just as the water temperature rises one degree above 40, 45 and 49 degrees Fahrenheit, so taking the water temperature every hour is beneficial. Since trout don't have eyelids and can't dilate their pupils, they must seek shade in extreme sun to avoid bright lights.
